A Seamless Blend of Traditional and Contemporary
Set in a historic district on Martha’s Vineyard, this home presents a classic New England feel from the front, with irregular paving stones leading to a massive pivot door—the first hint at the contemporary spaces leading to the poolhouse and outdoor shower beyond. In addition to preparing the softscaping and helping to set trees, our main scope for this project was the stonework, which encompassed the poolhouse interior and everything above the pool tile.
The poolhouse paving was a challenging project. The paving flows from the interior seating area and kitchen outside to the pool through massive pocket doors that slide along a nearly invisible sill, with stone sliced to fit between the runners. For the doors to function properly, the paving had to be perfectly level, with the added challenge of complicated mechanics to direct water away from the building and pool.
The result is a single plane, fluid transition from the interior to the exterior, with patterning that flows to the water’s edge. In the evening, when the pocket doors are fully open, the warmth of the interior spaces flows out into the landscape, reflecting on the pool to create a seamless transition between the home and its surroundings.
